Breaking News: The Parsonage

Oh! How exciting?!?! Breaking news! Breaking news!

We are utterly, splendidly, delightfully thrilled to confirm that our very favourite choir (of all time), The Parsonage, will be entertaining Made In The Shade customers with a special set of alt. classics and country tunes (and maybe even a Christmassy vibe or two?) at our special Festive Shopping Weekender at The Lighthouse.

The choir, led by choir mistress Janis Fyfe Murray, will perform around 3.30pm on the afternoon of Saturday 6th December.

If you have never heard The Parsonage sing before, you oughtta purchase your tickets for their Hank Williams tribute afternoon on Sunday 1st November. The Parsonage (and chums) will perform at Glasgow University's Debating Chamber from 2pm. Visit the choir's Myspace for more information. Oh. And be sure to take along plenty Handy Andies. I'm not sure if this is just me, but I become a little 'overwhelmed' when I hear those voices swirl around! Just beautiful. Best be prepared! :o)

Dear Senor Santa Clause

Dear Santa,

It's that time of year again. It doesn't seem so long since my last letter. Thank you for last year's lovely gifts. You really do have fabulous taste.

I have been a very good girl this year. I have worked hard alongside my fabulously talented friends to create a wonderful new shopping event in Glasgow. It's called Made In The Shade. People seem to like it. I admit, there has been a little pouting and even a little crying on the odd occasion during the past twelve months, but over all I think I have been very well behaved. Though you probably know that already, huh?

There are lots and lots of things I'd like for my Christmas this year. Since I can't decide, I thought I'd send you a huge list and you can just choose what you like. I won't be disappointed.

Ceramic Russian dolls by Kitty & Dude

Scrapbook jotter by Helen Gallogly

Beautiful fabric shopper by Emoni

Oh-so-cute domino pin by *pipless jam

Illustrated doillie by Made By Mother

Pretty pony by Lullabylily

Handmade books by Bindy Boo

(Etsy store coming soon!)

Thanks so much Senor Santa Clause. I'll be sure to leave you a pink wafer biscuit and a glass of pear juice for when you arrive at my house on Christmas Eve.

Say hi to Mrs Clause and the elves for me won't you.

Yours faithfully,

Carrie

MITS III Loves You!

My! Hasn't time flown!? The Made In The Shade team have successfully made it through an entire year's worth of events, positioning Made In The Shade as a key showcase for neo-craft, quirky design and vintage lifestyle in the UK.

Since the event launched in May we've welcomed around 9000 discerning shoppers through the Made In The Shade galleries at The Lighthouse and we've established an ever growing population of loyal fans and visitors. The feedback we have received from customers has been fabulous. Handmade lovers and vintage aficionados have truly embraced the arrival of Made In The Shade and I suspect we may even have converted some mainstream high street shoppers too as the Made In The Shade word has spread via enthusiastic chatter and press coverage! We have exciting plans for 2009 and we look forward to telling y'all about 'em soon!

For now, we'd like to thank a few folks who made our Festive Shopping Weekender such a success last weekend. 2886 visitors came to see us on Saturday and another 1896 came to see us on Sunday! Quite remarkable really! Thank you to all those customers who showed their interest and support in the event. Thank you to the 70+ exhibitors who set up shop over the two days, providing customers with a vast array of wonderful design pieces and vintage items to browse (and purchase!) and thanks to the makers who offered Christmas gifts up to our gift tree! Thank you to Hollie & Gillian and the staff at The Lighthouse. Thank you to the CEC members for taking part in the CEC showcase. Thank you to Ken, Jennifer, Dominic, Garry and Pauline. Thank you to the team at The List and the team at Selvedge. Thanks too to Maureen Ellis at the Evening Times, Jennifer at Indie Quarter and Caishnah at She's Crafty. Special thanks must go to Janis & The Parsonage for their beautiful peformance on Saturday. We have probably missed some names, but rest assured all your efforts are truly appreciated and we're thrilled to have your support.

We wish you all a fabulous Christmas and a swell New Year and we look forward to sharing our 2009 plans and events calendar with you shortly.

THE Vintage Hair Parlour Comes To MITS

PLEASE NOTE AMENDED INFO AS OF 02.12.08

NINA'S HAIR PARLOUR WILL UNFORTUNATELY NOT BE SETTING UP SALON AT MITS III BUT WE WILL HOPEFULLY HAVE A NEW DATE FOR YOU VERY SOON - APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

We are beside ourselves with excitement that Nina's Vintage Hair Parlour is setting up salon in the Made In The Shade Vintage Nook at this season's event! For those of you who haven't happened across the fabulous Nina and her team of talented stylists and grooming experts just yet, then read on - and be prepared for your life to change forever!

In 2006, Nina's Hair Parlour in London Town revolutionised hairdressing for a baying audience of style savvy individuals unhappy with the fashion for homogenisation and Kate Moss cast offs. Building a loyal clientele, Nina Butkovich-Budden wowed the nation's press with Victory Rolls, Finger Waves and Beehives of such exacting style and sophistication that an appointment with the headdresser became more precious than cocktails before dinner! The Guardian, The Independent, Elle Magazine, French Vogue; Nina was wooed by them all, yet no amount of good press could guarantee a Saturday afternoon appointment without at least a month's notice.

Moving away from replicating the same old fads, these vintage hairstyles are crafted to suit the wearer. Rockabilly Rebel, Screen Siren, Burlesque Beauty, Bounder or Cad, Nina's Hair Parlour caters for everyone and every look. Stocked with original 50s chairs mounted with full hair dryers, original metal marcel waving clips and the unbeatable retro know-how, the irresistible team at Nina's team offer a service unrivalled by any other salon in the country. And the experience doesn't need to end with your hair appointment! Make up and styling classes are a regular feature at the parlour on London's Edgware Road, allowing Nina to burst the bubble of everyday dressing down.

Nina has a history of working as a period style consultant at the Young Vic Theatre and has been the hair creator of the new Ray Davies's musical, 'Come Dancing' at The Theatre Royal. She has worked on international fashion shows with a myriad of photographers, music video directors and filmmakers and has joined celebrity hairstylist Danilo twice this year working on The Kylie Minogue Show for ITV and The Life Ball 2008 in Vienna. She recently feautred on the BBC's Celebrity Scissorhands programme as a guest stylist.

Now, how's that for special event feature!? If you're not impressed, then you oughta be! If you are doubting the impact one little hairdo can have on one's life, then book a styling slot for yourself at Made In The Shade!

As soon as we have all the finer details confirmed, we will open booking inquiries. As soon as we have Made In The Shade price lists etc., they will be posted here first. Keep your peepers peeled on the website for more info!

Made In The Shade II Thank Yous

My word... Two days on from our second event at The Lighthouse and the Made In The Shade team are still exhausted! Although I am most pleased to see that the darn rain has dried up (albeit temporarily) and that the blue skies are back to lift our spirits for a little while, it is taking all my might not to just curl up and slip back under my duvet!

Anyway... Firstly, we have an enormous amount of thanking to do. Many, many thanks to the 2000 handmade and vintage lovers who came to visit us at Made In The Shade despite the gale-force winds, the hail and the torrential rain! Glasgow shoppers truly are dedicated followers of fashion. Thank you so much for supporting our event and the 55 makers, designers and vintage collectors who showcased their work.

Of course, Made In The Shade would not have had such a prestigous home were it not for the fabulously talented Lynsey Smith, Manager of the Creative Entrepreneurs Club at The Lighthouse who invited us to hold the event in Gallery 5 in the first place. Lynsey has worked in tandem with the Made In The Shade organising team over the last year or so, ensuring that Made In The Shade runs smoothly and that the event continues to develop and grow. Lynsey took up the role of Mistress of Ceremonies at Made In The Shade II and my oh my, we are grateful to her for all her running around! Lynsey - you are wonderful x Thank you too, to the staff at The Lighthouse for overseeing the event and for ensuring that all Made In The Shade visitors were well looked after! Special mention must go to The Lighthouse Conference & Events team and to the lovely Gillian and her helpers. Muchos gracias!

Without the pick of wonderfully creative and talented makers, designers and vintage collectors eager to take part, Made In The Shade simply wouldn't work would it?! Why would thousands of people come to walk around an empty room? Thank you so much to all the exhibitors who went out of their way to build interesting, stunning, effective product displays and thank you to those who really embraced the theme of the day and got a little dressed up for the occasion! We appreciate your efforts and we appreciate your support and interest in Made In The Shade. May the event continue to flourish!

Thanks also to: Ken Robertson, Jennifer Nicolson, Ruth, the promo gals, Claire Sawers, Susie Cormack, Diana Kiernander, Maureen Ellis, Kirstin Innes, She's Crafty, Indie Quarter, The Skinny, Robson & Mason, the exhibitors who donated items to our goody bags, Joanne Quinn... and thank you to the exhibitors who noted the amount of work, time and energy that goes in to building a Made In The Shade event and took the time to thank the team (Carrie, Clare, Suzanne and Jo) for their efforts. Flora - thank you so, SO much for your thoughtful gift! Carrie Slug has moved in to my house and is having a lovely time. Gini, Elfie - thank you for your messages. Thank you to everyone who has gone out of their way to help us in the last few months and thank you to those who have positive, encouraging things to say! xx

However, in addition to the fabulous array of talented young designers and makers, October 25th marks the launch of the Made In The Shade Vintage Nook. Since we're still all wrapped up in vintage lifestyle dreams following our trip to London Town, we thought we'd give you a little taster of some of the products you will see in the all-new Vintage Nook during your next visit to Made In The Shade!

Nina's Vintage Hair Parlour

This week, Made In The Shade co-organisers Carrie Maclennan + Clare Nicolson were lucky enough to be invited to attend the grand opening party of Nina Butkovich-Budden's Vintage Hair Parlour & Ladies Boudoir in London Town this week. The party was hosted by Nina and her team and held at the Pheonix Artist Club in London's Westend on Wednesday 8th October. Carrie & Clare were (unsurprisingly) in their element - meeting and mingling with London's glamorous underground vintage enthusiasts and other likeminded makers and creative entrepreneurs. The Sunday Times (oh yes) sent a photographer to cover the ladies' old time evening so keep your eyes open for shots from the Pheonix Club in the press! May Made In The Shade now be on the lips of jivers and designers alike!

As if we weren't ecstatic enough to have been able to join in the celebrations with Nina and her glamorous chums and the fabulous burlesque starlets, we're also thrilled to announce that Nina will be setting up salon at Made In The Shade during the course of the Festive Shopping Weekender at The Lighthouse on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December. We will shortly be taking limited bookings on Nina's behalf. So - vintage enthusiasts! Glamour pusses! Burlesque godesses! Pin-up dreamers! Keep your finger tips at the ready over the next few weeks and remain poised to reserve your slot for an up-do! As Ophelia Bitz announced to the crowds on Wednesday, 'This woman will change your life!' Oh and she will....

Many, many thanks to Diana Kiernander for researching and writing the piece.
